Term Two, Week Six

Welcome to Week 6! Thank you to Mrs Todd and Year 7M who led us in a celebration of the feast of Our lady Help of Christians. She is the patron saint of Australia. We heard all about the qualities of Mary that we can emulate in our own lives, as we strive to be the best we can be. It was an informative and prayerful assembly that concluded with a whole school recitation of the Hail Mary prayer. Thankyou, once again.

Today, we once again made peace doves for Wednesday craft in honour of Well Being Week. We are using this week to try to be a little kinder to ourselves and others. The Bravehearts group visited our school and spoke to the children about feeling safe and the ways in which they can keep themselves and others happy and safe.

It was also National Simultaneous Storytime today and at around 11.00 a.m., several classes joined in with other primary schools across Australia to listen to the story The Wrong Book by Nick Bland. It was great to see the children get so involved in the telling of this wonderful story.

As you can see by the photo below, the small blue couch (courtesy of last year's Earn and Learn) is a great hit with the everyone, including soon-to-be members of our school! See you in the library!

Week Five, Term Two

Welcome to the new week! This morning, Year 7J led us in Pentecost prayer. We were reminded of the gifts of the spirit - wisdom, understanding, wonder and awe , counsel, knowledge, fortitude, and piety. These gifts were given to the disciples at Pentecost and are also given to us at our Confirmation. We were also reminded that, although we can't see Jesus, he is with us - right here and right now! Thankyou Year 7!
Craft today will be origami doves and our movie Matilda continues tomrrow. Don't forget to keep collecting the Woolworths Earn and Learn stickers so we can get new resources.  See you in the library!

Term Two, Week Four

Our prayer this week was led by 1M. As it is Mother's Day this Sunday, they shared with us a beautiful reflection about our mothers. We looked at the symbols of motherhood, remembered all the mothers who have come before us, and thanked our mothers for the gifts of themselves. The prayer ended with the song, "You Are My Sunshine" and left many of those watching searching for a tissue. Well done, Miss Henderson and 1M!

Our craft this week in the library was inspired by Mother's Day....shhh... don't tell your Mum! Special thanks goes to all those teachers, student teachers and upper school children who assisted with this activity - it was most appreciated!

Today we ran our annual Invitational Cross Country, organised, once again, so professionally by Mr Marrinan and Mrs Todd. The weather was amazing, 14 schools participated and the children competed with enthusiasm. St Anthony's did well, coming in third behind Mary MacKillop and Our lady of Mount Carmel. Thankyou to everyone who contributed to make this day another most successful event!

Term Two, Week Three

Our lunchtime activities this week include Read Across The Universe craft on Wednesday and the continuation of Matilda as our Thursday movie. Book Week this year takes place in August and the short listed books have been announced. We have most of them on display in the library already and we have started to decorate the library foyer with craft based around this year's theme.
A new addition for the library is our magnificent story chair which was purchased at a marked reduction. The chair has been a great hit with students, with some lucky children getting to share stories with their peers whilst sitting in it.
We thank Mr Lange and Year 5/6M for their prayer reflection about sharing peace, joy and love in our world. We were reminded that we can make a difference by sharing these qualities with the people around us and by taking the time to find peace, joy and love within ourselves.

Week Two, Term Two

This afternoon we commemorated ANZAC Day with a beautiful prayer reflection led by Mr Savage and prepared by Mr Griffin and students from across the year levels. We remembered the sacrifices made by men and women as they worked to protect our country in time of war and conflict. We acknowledged the work still done today by the dedicated people of the armed forces in their efforts to maintain peace and freedom for all.
Our craft today will be ANZAC poppies in commemoration of those who lost their lives, not only during the Gallopoli campaign, but in all conflicts throughout our history. Tomorrow is a holiday to celebrate ANZAC Day. See you in the library!

Week One, Term Two

Welcome to Week One! This morning, we shared prayer focussing on Christian Meditation. The reflection was led by Mr Griffin and his numeracy group. We were reminded of the reasons we meditate and the process we practise for our daily Christian Meditation. It was wonderful to see all the school so prayerfully meditating at the start of a busy day.
This term, we welcome Mrs Kerri Wilson to our staff for the rest of the year. Kerri takes the place of Madonna Craig, one of our Learning Support teachers. Madonna has taken maternity leave and is awaiting the arrival of a first child for herself and Fraser. We wish them every joy and blessing.
We also welcome four Australian Catholic University students - Alex, Katie (ex-St Anthony's students), Leah and Cara - who will be observing a number of classes across the school every Tuesday and Wednesday for the next 5 weeks. We also welcome Leigh from ACU who is doing her practise teaching in Year 2.
This week in the library we will be creating origami flying ducks and starting to watch Matilda, adapted from the popular novel by Roald Dahl. The new furniture has been a great hit in the library, with many children taking advantage of the comfy seating each lunch time. See you in the library!

Holy Week

Once again, our Holy Week prayer reflections on this very important part of the story of Jesus were beautifully prepared and respectfully shared. Well done to all those teachers, staff, parents and, of course, children who worked so well to present this celebration of our salvation.

Crazy Hair Day

Friday March 15 saw us all come to school with crazy hair. This initiative was to raise awareness for National Day Against Bullying and Violence. As you can see by this video, everyone got involved with some quite creative hair styles! Well done, everyone!

Pope Francis I

This morning , Catholics woke up to the news that the 266th pope has been elected in Rome. Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, a 76 year old Argentinian, will be our first Latin American pope. He has taken the name of Francis Ist because of this saint's mission of justice for the poor and care of the world. We wish him well in his endeavours to lead the catholic church.

Prayer Assembly March 13

Thankyou to 4M and Mr McLean for sharing the story of St Patrick with us on assembly this morning. We revisited the life and mission of this great saint and were reminded to be ambassadors for justice and peace in our world, particularly during this Lenten season. Well done, all!

Prayer Assembly March 6

Thank you to 5/6J and Mrs Bridge for their Lenten prayer which focussed on what we can do to effect change in the world this Lent. We looked at basic human rights and read Luke's Gospel of the tree that did not bear fruit. We were all encouraged to donate to the Caritas Lenten Appeal and look forward to the 'Open Door' activity which will be run by 5/6J. A very meaningful and positive prayer reminding us of our Lenten promises and actions - thank you!

Lunchtime Activities March 4 - 8

Welcome to Week 6! Last week, due to the inclement weather and our Swimming carnival which was held on Friday, the library was not open during the lunch times, except for Wednesday  and Thursday, when we made swirling snakes and watched WALL.E. This week, weather permitting, we will make paper chain people for craft and continue with our movie. See you in the library!

Prayer Assembly February 27

Thank you to Mrs Giesemann, Mrs Wood and the students of 5/6 A for their prayer which encouraged us to reach for the stars. We all have hopes and dreams and the gifts to fulfill them. With faith and the support of those around us, we can indeed, reach for the stars. So, name your gifts, claim your gifts, and aim your gifts out into the world!

Prayer Assembly February 20

Thankyou to Mr Griffin and students from across the year levels for sharing  a prayer reflection about the saints after which our classes are named - St Anthony, St Joseph, St Mary MacKillop of the Cross and Nano Nagle. We looked at the lives and the different charisms of these wonderful people and how we can emulate them in our own lives here at St A's. Thank you, all.

Welcome B-B-Q

What a lovely evening we had last Friday at our Welcome Back to School Family B-B-Q! The weather was perfect and many families came to share in the b-b-q prepared and served by the staff of the school. The atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly and we whiled away the hours with lots of fun and converstaion. This has proven to be a popular event in our school calendar and we look forward to continuing this lovely tradition. Take alook at the slideshow of the b-b-q.

Lunchtime Activities - February 11-15

Welcome to Week 3! This Wednesday marks the start of Lent in our church calendar. We will trial Anagramarama at lunchtime on Monday this week, instead of Letters and Numbers. It is a great game where we try to make as many words as possible from a given word in the shortest time - lots of fun for 'wordies'! Mrs Purdie will be here for Storytime on Tuesday. Our Wednesday activity will be Valentine hearts again, for those who missed out last week. We will continue to watch 'A Bug'e Life' on Thursday and children are welcome to make their own choices on Friday. See you in the library!

Leadership Assembly February 6

Congratulations to our Year 7 students who accepted their Senior badges at the Leadership assembly on Wednesday. The students pledged to demonstrate leadership by modelling the characteristics of inclusivity, respect, responsibility and pride in their school, as they led the school in a celebration of all that makes St Anthony's so special. We know that these students will rise to the challenge set before them to be role models and wonderful representatives for the rest of the student body. Well done all and special thanks to their teachers, Mrs Rogers and Mrs Todd, who prepared the children so well.

Year 7 Graduation and Fun Day

On Tuesday evening, we celebrated the journey of our graduating students through their years of primary education. The students were formally farewelled with Mass followed by dinner and entertainment by the children. It was a beautiful and moving evening, with the children acquitting themselves wonderfully well as they spoke, danced and sang about their years here at St A's. Many staff and parents were witness to this celebration and HUGE congratulations need to go to their teachers - Mrs Bernadette Rogers and Ms Narelle Todd - for their dedication and commitment, not only for this special evening, but for the whole academic year. Special thanks also go to Mrs Annette Ash (president of the P&F and year 7 parent), who tirelessly worked behind the scenes, the wonderful year 6 parents who catered for the evening and helped out in many ways, and to all those 'unsung heroes' who remain nameless, but nevertheless, are very valued for their contributions, and finally, the Year 7 students who once again made us proud and humbled by the growth and maturity we witness in them. Best wishes for your secondary education and always remember to reach for the stars! Well done, all!

Wednesday saw the whole school take a big sigh and relax, with all classes involved in Fun Day activities at various venues. Feedback indicates that the day was a great success and everyone now feels energised to face moving day today and our end-of-year liturgy and farewell on Friday. It has been another great year and we can all look forward to a relaxing break, after which we will be ready to face the new school year in 2013. Have a wonderful Christmas, take extreme care and God bless us, one and all!

Farewell and Happy Holidays!

Yet another busy year in the library is drawing to a close, with many new resources purchased and catalogued, and the continued popularity of the varied lunchtime activities - Story Time, Letters and Numbers, Craft Day and Movie Day - on offer each day. Lots of information about what happens at our wonderful school has been added to the library blog. The library staff has continued to endeavour to make the library a user-friendly and welcoming centre for students, staff and parents.
Our rearrangement of the book shelves, with the Junior Series and Quick Reads books displayed in easy access baskets, has proven to be very popular. Students in Years 4 – 7 now also have easy access to the Series, Picture Book and Fiction sections, with a dramatic increase in the borrowing of series books. We continue to reassess our readers, weeding old resources and purchasing new readers to supplement shortages.
We have processed approximately 1000 new resources this year, including books, games, equipment, audio and computer software, many purchased to complement the new Australian Curriculum. Thanks to the P&F, our subscription to Sunshine Online, a wonderful resource which gives us access to over 300 titles with more than 1 000 activities for our students, has been extended for next year. Our continued participation in the Woolworths Earn and Learn initiative this year meant that we were able to purchase from Modern Teaching Aids a wide variety of resources to the value of 128 510 points – we look forward to receiving the resources early next year. Thank you to everyone who supported this promotion.
Book Week this year with its theme of Champions Read, was well supported, with children and staff getting into the spirit of the theme and coming along to the Book Week parade dressed in a varied and most interesting array of champion costumes. We were very lucky to have two local visiting authors – Katrina Logan and Janet Reid – come to talk to students during Book Week. The feedback from these visits was very positive.
Book Fair was also a success, with children purchasing many books and accessories and the resulting points earned meant that the library could purchase many new titles to supplement our fiction and non-fiction collections. Three lucky children each received items to the value of $20 from the fair, thanks to the raffle run during the week.
Another welcome addition to our library is the new comfortable seating we have purchased for the children. This lovely setting will be a welcome extra ‘chill out and read’ zone for the children when they come to the library and will brighten up the entry. Thank you again to the P & F for approving the purchase of these items. In addition, the new Welcome mat that now graces the entry also helps to improve the look of the library, both in practical and aesthetic terms.
We would like to give a very special thank you to those wonderful parents who have given of their time as volunteers to help us by covering books at home and cleaning and shelving books – without your help, many tasks would take much longer and our children would not so readily have the benefit of new resources. Thank you also, to our few dedicated library monitors who have regularly given up their lunch times to help out in the library.  In all, it has been an exciting year and we look forward to another productive year in the library in 2013.

Year 5/6 Picture Books

Well done to our Year 5 and 6 students who created their own picture books during literacy rotations in Terms 3 and 4. The end results are wonderful and are a credit to the children's hard work and dedication. They employed many literary devices and the illustrations were great. Today they presented their published picture books to the Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students. The little ones thoroughly enjoyed listening to these creative stories and the author/illustrators did a wonderful job of reading their creations aloud.

Lunchtime Activities November 26 - 30

Welcome to Week 8! Can you believe we are at the pointy end of the school year? Wow! This week during the lunch hour we will be watching The Polar Express every day and also continuing with Christmas Craft for those interested. We will continue this pattern for next week as well. See you in the library!

Prayer Assembly Novemer 21

Prep M and Mrs Purdie shared with us a lovely prayer all about the third week of Advent . The children read, acted and sang beautifully, all the while reminding us to spend this time of waiting in doing good deeds for those not as lucky as we are. So make sure you get those items in for the St Vincent de Paul Christmas hampers! Thank you, prep M, for this timely reminder presented in such a prayerful way!

Lunchtime Activities November 19 - 23

It has been a very busy week this week, with over 4000 resources being returned or renewed for next year. Well done to all those who have tried so hard to get their books back. At this stage, 7M and Prep M are leading the way, with no overdues on the children's loans - well done! We did some Christmas activities during the lunch hours this week and all children who visited the library had the chance to decorate our Christmas tree, which is looking very lovely. We will continue with Christmas craft and dvd next week. See you in the library during Week 8!

Music Count Us In

This afternoon, we celebrated "Music Count Us In"  in the Sala di Sant' Antonio. The band  entertained us and the Year 7 students and Senior Choir led the singing of the 2012 "Music Count Us In" song "Different People". Everyone who attended enjoyed the entertainment very much. Thank you to Mrs Francis and Mr Gittens for preparing the children so well, and congratulations to all those children who participated with such enthusiasm. The singing of our school song as a finale was definitely a highlight! Well done, all!

Prayer Assembly November 14

Thank you to Mr Lynam and 4N who led us in our prayer for the Second Week of Advent  this morning. We were reminded to stay awake and to listen for the voices of the downtrodden and displaced in our communities. We are called to bring the Good News to all. The children read and enacted the scripture about John the Baptist who called the people to prepare for the coming of the Saviour. Thank you 4N - well done!

Lunchtime Activities November 12 - 16

Welcome to Week 6! The term is fast drawing to a close and classes have begun to return resources to the library. This is the last week for borrowing and all books are due back by the end of next week. So look in the bedroom, the lounge, the kitchen, or wherever you may have home readers or other books and get them back to the library! The classes with the least (hopefully zero) overdues will receive a treat. This week in the lunch hour, we finished some ninja star origami - thanks to Ben and William. On Tuesday we played Letters and Numbers and on Wednesday we did some Christmas Bell origami. The movie Toy Story 3 continues on Thursday. Keep an eye out for something special in the library next week! See you in the library!

Prayer Assembly November 7

Thank you to Mrs Lindbom and 3M for sharing a beautiful reflection about the first week of Advent with us this morning. Advent is a time of waiting and anticipation as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus. We were reminded today to be awake, to believe and to have hope in the coming of our saviour. A lovely way to commence this special time of year!
